What Is Hotel SEO?

Hotel SEO is search engine optimisation built specifically for accommodation. It helps with two things:

Your property appears when a traveller asks Google, ChatGPT or an AI assistantwhere to stay
Your website makes it easy for that traveller to go ahead and reserve

Travel search works a little differently from most industries. Alongside the hotel down the road, you’re sharing the page with OTAs, metasearch sites and Google’s own hotel results, which now fill much of the first screen on mobile. Chasing a handful of broad terms rarely changes what you see on the books.

SEO for hospitality works best when it follows how guests plan a trip and when it focuses on the dates you most want to fill.

Very few guests book after a single search. Often it begins weeks out with a destination search (“things to do in Margaret River in winter”). Then comes something more specific (“Margaret River accommodation with spa”), followed by comparing value and reading reviews. Last of all, they search your property’s name, sometimes on a different device or a partner’s phone.

Each of those moments reflects a different search intent, and each is a chance to say hello before an OTA does. Most properties only appear for that final search, so there’s usually plenty of opportunity to grow.

More travellers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews to suggest places to stay. These tools draw on a few sources:

The more clearly your website explains what makes your property special, the more likely AI assistants are to recommend it. That’s why AI visibility services come included in every program we run.

More of Your Guests Can Book Direct

OTAs do a lot of good for Australian properties. They reach international and last-minute travellers who can be hard to reach on your own, and the exposure they give you is worth having.

The encouraging part is that many of those guests began their search on Google. They looked up a suburb, an event or a reason to travel, and the first results they saw belonged to sites like Booking.com and Expedia. That’s simply because those sites have done the work to be there.

Our Hotel SEO Services

Our work covers six areas, run together as one program. We begin with whatever will help your reservations most, so you’re never paying for everything at once.

Keyword Research Built Around How Guests Book

We start by getting to know your guests and what they’re looking for, then find the searches that lead them to you. This includes destination and suburb terms, event and venue terms such as

Built by People Who Understand Hotel Revenue

We think about SEO the way you think about your business: in RevPAR, ADR, occupancy and net revenue after distribution costs. Rankings matter, but only because of what they bring in.

Our plans follow your revenue calendar. A quiet Tuesday in February needs something different from a Saturday in Grand Final week. You might be building midweek corporate business, lifting a shoulder season or launching a new wing in March. Whatever it is, your hotel SEO strategy should focus on what matters most to you right now, and ours will too. We like to chat with your revenue manager before choosing targets, so our effort goes to the dates that need it most.

Who We Work With

We work alongside owners, general managers, revenue managers and marketing leads across the sector:

How We Grow Direct Bookings, Month by Month

Good SEO grows steadily, a bit like a great reputation. Here’s what working together usually looks like.

Step 1: Audit and Benchmark

We get to know your property, website, Business Profile, local listings and competitor set and look at where your direct revenue comes from today. You'll receive a plain-English report and a clear 90-day plan.

Step 2: Fix the Foundations

This stage covers technical fixes, tracking, schema and Business Profile improvements. It's often where the first wins appear, because it helps your existing pages perform at their best.

Step 3: Build Pages for Demand

We create new pages and refresh existing ones for the searches guests make when they're ready to reserve. These cover room types, packages, nearby venues, events and trip types.

Step 4: Build & Maintain Authority

Content, digital PR and local partnerships build links and trust over time. Most properties see encouraging movement within three to six months, and the biggest gains tend to arrive in the second half of the first year.

Reporting in the Language You Already Use

What You'll See Every Month

Each month you’ll receive a one-page summary your owner or asset manager can read over a coffee, with the detail behind it whenever they’d like it. It covers:

Clear, Honest and Easy to Read

We keep reports focused on what helps you make decisions, so there’s no wading through pages of charts. If something isn’t working as well as we’d hoped, we’ll let you know early and explain what we’re adjusting.

Local operators may compete with OTAs and holiday rentals for destination searches.

Why Hoteliers Choose to Work With a Specialist

Hospitality is a world of its own, and it helps to work with people who already know it. We understand rate parity, why your reservations platform sits on another domain, why head office signs off on your homepage and why midweek occupancy is always on your mind.

We’ll only recommend paid channels when they’ll genuinely help, and we keep our agreements flexible. We report in revenue, we’re easy to reach and we’ll always be upfront about what SEO can do for your property.

Get a Free Hotel Visibility Audit

We’d love to show you where more direct revenue could come from. Frequently Asked Questions About SEO for Hotels

What is SEO in hotels?

SEO in hotels means improving a property’s website and online presence so it ranks higher in Google and other search engines when travellers are planning a trip. The goal is more direct reservations and a healthier balance across your booking channels.

What does SEO stand for, and what does it mean?

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It means making your website easier for search engines to understand and more helpful for the people searching, so it earns higher unpaid positions in the results. Unlike Google Ads, there’s no cost per click.

What are the best SEO keywords for hotels?

The best keywords are the ones guests use when they’re close to deciding and that you have a realistic chance of ranking for. For most properties, they fall into four groups:

– property type plus suburb or town

– venue and event searches (“hotel near the MCG”)

– trip-type searches (“family resort Gold Coast”)

– amenity searches (“motel with parking Fremantle”)

OTAs usually do well on broad terms like “hotels Sydney”, while independents shine on the more specific searches. Keyword research works best when it starts with your guest data.

What is the 80/20 rule for SEO?

The 80/20 rule, or Pareto principle, suggests about 80 per cent of your results come from 20 per cent of your effort. For a hotel, a small number of pages usually bring in most organic reservations. These are typically your homepage, key room types and two or three location or venue pages. We find those pages early and make them excellent first.

How long does it take to see results?

Technical fixes and Business Profile improvements can show movement within weeks. New pages usually take three to six months to rank well, and authority keeps building after that. We’ll set milestones together in the first month so you know what to expect.

Should we stop using OTAs?

Not at all. OTAs are a valuable channel, especially for international and last-minute guests. The aim is balance. More guests book direct, so you pay commission on fewer of them and have more say over rates, upsells and the guest relationship.

We're part of a hotel chain or franchise. Can you still help?

Absolutely. Where head office manages the main website, we focus on your Business Profile, local content, reviews and local links. We work alongside the brand’s digital team on anything that needs their sign-off.

Do you need access to our PMS or reservations system?

Read-only access to Google Analytics, Search Console and your Business Profile is enough to get started. For revenue reporting, a monthly reservations export from your PMS is really helpful. We never need payment data.

Is SEO better than Google Ads for hotels?

They work best as a team. Paid search and metasearch give you visibility straight away, but only while you’re paying for them. SEO takes a little longer and keeps bringing in reservations with no cost per click. A strong hotel marketing strategy uses both, and over time SEO reduces how much you need to spend on ads.
